RAR - Rocking Armchair Rod was the first commercial success of Charles and Ray Eames. This chair is widely recognized to be a classic in the history of modern furniture design. The RAR was first presented at the Museum of Modern Art in 1948. New materials, especially those that held promise for doing more with less, fascinated Charles and Ray Eames throughout their careers and this chair is a great example. The shell is made of fibreglass reinforced plastic, and and the base is an eiffel tower metal base with wood rockers on the bottom. The fascination of new materials led the Eames' to inventive modern furniture, such as the molded plastic chair. The Rocker was the first plastic chair to be mass produced. The first few years the Evans Company manufactured the RAR, but later Herman Miller took over the production. It is said that the RAR rockers were originally gifts to Herman Miller employees who just had newborns. Today Vitra produces reissues of the Eames Rocker, RAR.
